  • American School for the Deaf

    In Hartford, Connecticut the first school for disabled children was created. This school was for deaf children and was soon followed by a separate school for the blind. This was the first school in the western hemisphere created solely for disabled children.
  • Mississipi Gains Statehood

    Mississippi becomes the 20th United States state.
  • Beatie V. Board of Education

    This court case discussed a student who had a disability that caused him to drool. The student had to ability to learn but because of his facial abnormalities and drooling, other students and teachers were uncomfortable. Schools were allowed to expel students who drooled due to a disability.
  • 19th Amendment

    The constitutional amendment to allow white women to vote was passed by congress. This amendment was ratified in 1920, but was originally passed in 1919.
  • Autism Classified

    A Doctor at Johns Hopkins University classified autism. While it wasn't until 1990 that this classification was included and specified in the IDEA, autism was originally classified in 1943.
  • Color Television

    The first public television was made readily available to the public.
  • Brown V. Board of Education

    This was a landmark case that overturned Plessy V.Ferguson that made the claim that separate but equal. This case made it illegal to discriminate in schools based on race. This encouraged families of students who were disabled to fight for the same rights for their students.
  • Genna Parents were Born

    Both of Gennas parents were born in 1972.
  • Section 504 of Rehabilitation

    This allowed protection from discrimination for disabled students. Within this law concepts such as Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) and Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) were introduced. This was the first law that gave any protection to students with disabilities.
  • Handicapped Children's Protection Act

    This was a law that gave parents more of a say in the IEP that was being developed for the students with disabilites.
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

    The first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle movie was released in 1990.
  • IDEA

    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was passed. This law stated that all students with disabilities have the right to an education. It included acts that held state and local governments accountable.
  • Caroline and Genna were Born

  • IDEA Reauthorized

    While IDEA was reauthorized every few years since it was originally passed. The last time that it was reauthorized was in 2004. During this authorization, there was an emphasis on greater accountability as well as implementing research-based practices.
