  • Council for Exceptional Children

    The Council for Exceptional Children was organized by a group of administrators and supervisors attending the summer session at Teachers College, Columbia University, and their faculty members. The Council begins with 12 members. Elizabeth E. Farrell was the Founder and first President.
  • National Association for Retarded Children (ARC)

    National Association for Retarded Children (ARC)
    The Arc of the United States is an organization serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It was originally founded by parents of individuals with developmental disabilities, and it is based in Washington D.C.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Brown vs. Board of Education
    This was a landmark United States Supreme Court case in which the Court declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional. It also had a major impact on Spcial Education stating that "separate educational facilities are inherently unequal."
  • The Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    The Education for All Handicapped Children Act
    This act was enacted by the United States Congress, and it required all public schools accepting federal funds to provide equal access to education and one free meal a day for children with physical and mental disabilities.
  • Board of Education v. Rowley

    Board of Education v. Rowley
    It provides federal money to assist state and local agencies in educating handicapped children, and conditions such funding upon a States compliance with extensive goals and procedures.
  • The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Amendments of 1997

    President Clinton signed amendments to the Act that focus on improving the education of children with disabilities by identifying children with special needs before they enter school and providing services to help them, developing individualized education programs (IEPs) that focus on improving educational results through the general curriculum, educating children with disabilities with their nondisabled peers, and more.

  • Recent Special Education Services under IDEA

    In school year 2013-14, a higher percentage of kids ages 3–21 received special education services under IDEA for specific learning disabilities than for any other type of disability. A specific learning disability is a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or using language, spoken or written, that may make it difficult to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or do math.
  • Access to Schools Concerning Children with Disabilities

    Access to school is often limited by a lack of understanding about children's needs, lack of teacher training, unconducive school environment, classroom support and learning resources and facilities. Denying children with disabilities their right to education has an impact on learning, achievement and employment opportunities. Education systems need to promote inclusion by ensuring the presence of all children including children with disabilities.
  • School Sports Teams for Kids with Disabilities

    Students with disabilities are no different – like their peers without disabilities, these students benefit from participating in sports. But unfortunately, we know that students with disabilities are all too often denied the chance to participate and with it, the respect that comes with inclusion. This is simply wrong. All kids with disabilities will soon be granted the right and the ability to play whatever sports they want.
