    Columbus was looking for a new water route to Asia. But instead, he found The New World. This was super important because he was looking for gold for Queen Isabella, and he told her that there was lots of gold there. This paved the way for future exploration of the Americas.

    Pineda created a map of the Texas coast that many explorers used to navigate. Narvez, De Vaca, and Coronado used it among others.

    Cortes Voyage
    Cortes was a conquistador who traveled to the New World to look for gold. He sailed to Mexico and found the Aztecs.The Aztecs were a fierce tribe that had tons of gold. They welcomed Cortes because they thought he was a god. Cortes then betrayed them by joinung forces with smaller tribes, and took the Aztecs down. This was important because he told Spain that there was gold there, and sparked further exploration.

    De Vaca shipwrecked on Galveston, Texas after trying to make it out of Florida, which he was shipwrecked on. He was in Texas for eight years. He met the Karankawa, Jumano, Couhilitecan indian tribes.

    Fray Marcos and Estaban's Journey
    The purpose of the journey was to prove or disprove De Vaca's claims of Cicola, the seven cities of gold. Estaban was killed when he went up to an indian tribe and demanded their women. After he died, Fray Marcos thought he saw a city larger than Mexico city with gold.

    De Soto was the leader, but he died from disease and was thrown into the Mississippi River. De soto was also credited for discovering the Mssissippi River.

    Coronado's Expedition
    He searched for Quivera and Cibola.His guide for searching for Quivera was Turk, who was named that because he looked Turkish. Upon realizing the guide was lying, Coronado made him dig his own grave and strangled him. Coronado discovered Palo Duro Canyon and the Grand Canyon. His expedition was important because he reported to Spain that Texas was no good becasue it had harsh land, no gold, and mean indians.
