Space Timeline

  • Ancient Telescope Discovery (Galileo)

    Ancient Telescope Discovery (Galileo)
One of the discoveries made with Galileo's telescope was that Saturn has rings. The rings of the planets were not known before and were a very controversial finding at the time.
  • First man made object in Space

First man made object in Space
MW 18014: It was a German V2 rocket and was sent to attempt to see if space can be reached. It marked the beginning of space discovery.
  • First U.S. object sent into Space

First U.S. object sent into Space
It was called Explorer one and was the first object that was sent into space. The importance of the object was that it was able to measure radiation in Earth’s orbit.
  • First living thing sent into space

First living thing sent into space
It was called the Sputnik one and reached space October 4, 1957. It began the space age exploration competition all over the world, mainly between Russia and the United States.
  • First object to land on the moon

First object to land on the moon
Luna 2 was the first object to land on the moon. It was the first spacecraft to contact another solar system body.
  • First man sent into space

    First man sent into space
Yuri Gagarin was the first man sent into space and was sent by the Soviet Union to space. It proved that man can explore space and be able to reach it safely.
  • Ranger 7

    Ranger 7
Ranger 7 was the first probe to enter space successfully. The importance of the probe entering space is that it was able to take high definition pictures of the moon and gave way to Human’s researching the moon to landing on it.
  • Ranger 8

    Ranger 8
It was the first spacecraft to land on the moon. On Feb 17, 1965, it entered after Ranger 7 and was able to take 7,000 high-definition pictures of the moon. This further aided in the moon landing by discovering its surface.
  • Surveyor 1

    Surveyor 1
It was the first spacecraft to have a successful soft landing on the moon. It proved that astronauts could have a safe landing on the moon and benefit interplanetary programs.
  • Explorer 35

    Explorer 35
It entered lunar orbit and its purpose was to discover the cause of the solar wind. It was discovered that the moon has no magnetosphere and that the moon creates a "cavity" within the solar stream.
  • First man to walk on the moon

First man to walk on the moon
Neil Armstrong took the spacecraft called Apollo 11 to reach the moon and walk on it. It was a major feat in space age exploration history because it was the first time that a human had made contact with a solar body and was able to do so successfully and safely.
  • Modern Telescope Discovery

    Modern Telescope Discovery
In 2007, the Hubble space telescope showed that there was another dwarf planet that is larger than Plato, called Eris. It is important because it led to the discovery of a 3-D map that showed the distribution of dark matter in the galaxy.
