1962: John Glenn orbits the Earth and becomes the first human to do so. He went around the Earth three times.

1967: Apollo 11 is destroyed by a fire killing all the astronauts inside of it. This becomes the first death in space.

1969: Neil Armstrong walks on the moon. He becomes the first person to walk on the moon. Many people watched him walk on the moon on TV.

1970: A tank of oxygen bursts in space on Apollo 13. Everybody onboard is okay and they head back to Earth.

1981: Columbia becomes the first reusable space craft. It goes into space as a rocket and come out of space as an airplane.

1981: The first American women in space is Sally Ride. She was part of the seventh space craft.

1984: The first woman to walk in space is Svetlana Savitskaya. Her partner was Vladimir Dzhanibekov.

1986: The spacecraft Challenger explodes. This explosion kills Christa McAuliffe, the first teacher in space, and many others are killed.

1990: The Hubble telescope is brought to space. It becomes the first telescope that is in space.

1996: Shannon Lucid stays in space for 223 days. She breaks the record for the number of days in space.

1997: Sojourner observed Mars; this was the first robot to go on another planet. Sojourner takes lots of pictures of Mars.

1998: The first old person to go to space became John Glenn. He also studied in space and how riding in the spacecraft and going to space effected older people.

2003: The first Chinese man to go to space becomes Yang Liwei. China becomes the third country to go to space.

2004: Cassini Huygens circles around Saturn. Cassini Huygens is the first spacecraft to circle Saturn.
