    The National Aeronautics and Space Administration or NASA was formed by the USAduring the race in 1958. It controls all missions and launches to space.
  • Discoverer 14

    Discoverer 14
    The Discoverer 14 was the first satellite into space by coming of a moving spacecraft in orbit and then reattaching in mid-air. It was launched by the United States.
  • First Russian Man In Space

    Yuri Gagarin was the firsy man in space. Yuri was sent by Russians on the Vostok 1 space craft. This launch was in 1961
  • First American in Space

    In 1961 one month after the Russians sent Yuri into space. The United States sent Alan Shepard. He was on the tiny-capsule named the Freedom 7.

    On June 16, 1963 Valentina Tereshkova was the first waman in space sent by the Russians or Soviet Union on the Vostok 6 spacecraft.

    1965, Alexy Lenov was the first man out in actual space. This Russian mission was supposed to be Vostok 11, but was cancelled and done on Voskhod 2.

    Ed White was the first American to complete a space walk. He was sent in 1965 on missin Gemini 4.
  • Luna 10

    Luna 10 was the first space craft to orbit the moon. It finished the orbit in 3 hours. The design was similar to the Luna 9. The Luna 10 was launched in 1966.

    In 1967 Soyuz was launched, on its return to Earth, technical problems caused a crash and the death of Vladimir. It was the first fatal space flight.

    Apollo 8 was the first manned spacecreaft to orbit the moon. It was a three man crew. The spacecraft was launched by the U.S. in 1968. The mission took three days, 10 orbits in 20 hours
  • Apollo 11

    Apollo took place on July 6, 1969. It was the first flight that took men to the moon and was a project by the U.S.A. This is a great achievement because we beat the Soviets to the moon.
  • Explorer 1

    Explorer 1 was the first American satellite put into Earths orbit. The satellite was launched after Sputnick and stayed in orbit until 1970.
  • Apollo 17

    Apollo 17 returned to Earth in December of 1972. It was the last or most recent landing by the U.S. The mission took 12 days and no one has returned to the moon.
  • Luna 9

    Luna 9
    February 3, 1996 was the day the Luna 9 bacame the first space craft to have a soft luna landing. The Russians sent the Luna 9. Luna 9 took space pictures of the surface of the moon.
