    Sputnik 1
    The Soviets launched the first man made satellite into space. The satellite was called Sputnik. It was about the size as a beachball. The satellite was 58 cm in diameter and weighed 183.9 lbs. Sputnik took 98 minutes to orbit the Earth. Since the Soviets can launch a satellite it proved that they can launch missiles. That was the beginning of the ¨space race.¨

    Sputnik 2
    The Soviets launched a female dog, named Laika, into space in Sputnik 2. Laika means ¨barker¨ in Russian. She is in space for seven days, proving that animals and humans can live in space. Since they can'tbring her back alive the soviets put her to sleep. Finally Sputnik 2 falls to Earth in April the next year.

    The Soviets launched Luna 1 in the direction of the moon. The space craft was sphere shaped. Luna 1 went into orbit of the sun, and on Jan. 4 it was 5995 km away from the moon.

    Yuri Gagarin was the first man in space. He was in the Soviet Vostok 1. Just in case the flight caused him to act wierd, the crafts controls were locked. There was a key in an envolope just in case of an emergency.

    JFK Gave a Speech About the Moon
    John F. Kennedy delivered a special message to congress on "urgent national needs.' In the message he asked for $7 billon to $9 billion over the next 5 years for NASA. They need the money to achieve a goal of sending a man to the moon and bringing them back safely.

    The Soviets launched Valentina Tereshkova on Vostok 6. She was the first woman in space. Valentina spent 3 days in space. Her space craft became withen 3 miles of Valeri Byovsky in Vostok 5.

    Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov did the first space walk outside the Soviet Voshkod 2. He was doing the spacewalk for 12 minutes. Cosmonaut Alexei Leonov was 30 years old. He beat Ed White by about 3 months.

    The Soviet Luna 9 was the first space craft to land on the moon. The space craft transmits photos of the surface of the moon to Earth. The probe also proved other things can land on the moon.

    Apollo 11
    The "space race" ended when Apollo 11 landed on the moon. The Americans Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin, and Michael Collins were in Apollo 11. The mission was to land on the moon and hove them come back safely.
