The Soviet union launched Sputnik 1, which at 83 kilograms and about the size of a basketball, became the world’s first artificial satellite and the first man-made object to be placed into the Earth’s orbit.

Laika was the first animal to travel into space aboard Sputnik 2. A week after the launch the dog died due to lack of oxygen.

Aoard Vostok 1, Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was the first human to travel into outer space.

Aboard Vostok 6, Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman to travel into space on a 3-day mission, during which she completed 48 orbits around the earth.

The first manned space flight around the moon took place. It is also the first human space flight to enter into the gravitational influence of another celestial body. Its crew was the first in history to see the far side of the moon, as well as the first to observe the earth from our satellite.

U.S. astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin and Michael Collins set off on the Apollo 11 space mission, the first lunar landing attempt. After landing successfully on July 20, Armstrong became the first man to walk on the moon’s surface; he famously called the moment “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

The soyuz and Apollo 18 spacecraft docked in earth's orbit. It was the first joint mission of the space agencies of both countries. Historians agree that this event ended the cold war.
