This was the day that the Soviets sent a dog named Laika into space. I thought this was important because it proved that living life could go into space and live. -
Explorer 1
The Explorer 1 was the first satellite of the United States and discovered the Van Allen Radiation Belt. I think this was important because it was the first satellite the United States had made and it discovered the radiation belt. -
Luna 2
The Luna 2 was the first spacecraft to hit the surface of the moon. This is important to the Space Race because it was the first man made object on a different planet then Earth. -
Vostok 1
The Vostok 1 was the first human spaceflight in history, making Yuri Gagarin the first human to cross into outer space. This is important to the Space Race because it was the first human in space and the first orbit around Earth. -
Announcement of a Man Landing on the Moon
This was the day it was announced that a man in the U.S.A would land on the moon. I thought this was important to the Space Race because it was a big announcement and everybody was excited. -
Vostok 6
The Vostok 6 was the first female spaceflight in history. That making Valentina Tereshkova the first woman in space. I think this is important because it was the very first woman in space and that is a very important thing to remember. -
Luna 10
The Luna 10 was the first artificial satellite of the moon, made by the Soviets. I think this was important because it was the first satellite of the moon in history. -
Lunar Orbiter 1
The Lunar Orbiter 1 was the first American spacecraft to orbit the moon and take a picture of Earth from that distance. I think this is important because we never knew what the Earth looked like from that distance until that day. -
Apollo 11
This was when Neil Armstrong was the first man to land on the moon. This was important because Neil was the first man to land on the moon and this was America's big step in the Space Race.
