    First Space Suit was created
    It was first worn by astronaut Yuri Gargarin in 1961. It is used to keep the air pressure under control and provide an environment for the astronaut to live. Space has no oxygen/air, is very cold and has negative air pressure because it is a vacuum. After the fire on Apollo 1 they changed the design of the space suit to be fireproof.

    The V2 Rocket was produced
    V2 was the rocket that sent the first mammal successfully into outer space. The mammal was a rhesus monkey named Albert II. The rocket weighed 28 000 pounds, was 14 metres in height and travelled 5 760 miles per hour.
  • Sputnik 1 was launched

    Sputnik 1 was launched
    Sputnik helped to identify the upper atmospheric layer's density, by measuring the satellite's orbital changes. It travelled at 18 000 miles per hour, taking 96.2 minutes to complete an orbit. It was only about the size of a beach ball but weighed 184 pounds. Sputnik 1 burned up on January 4, 1958, as it fell from orbit, after travelling about 60 million km and spending 3 months in orbit around the earth.

    Picture found at visual photosVostok 1 was designed by Soviet engineers guided by Sergey Korolyov under the supervision of Kerim Kerimov. Vostok 1 weighed 10 420 pounds. It was the spacecraft that took the first human into space, Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961. Yuri was in space for 1 hour and 48 minutes and was 27 years old.

    The Lunar Buggy (Lunar Roving Vehicle) was made
    In 1971, the Lunar Buggy was first used during the Apollo 12 landing to explore the Moon. The Lunar buggy was created by Eduardo San Juan who graduated from Mapua Institute of Technology. The lunar buggy was made to help astronauts move around the moon easier to collect samples to bring back to earth.

    Canadarm was launched
    Canadarm is a remote-controlled arm attached to the Space Shuttle. It is used to pick up whatever they have in the Shuttle's payload bay and move it to where they need it to be. After the Shuttle Columbia disaster, Canadarm has a camera to be used on every flight to check the Shuttle's thermal protection tiles for any damage. It is 15.2 metres long and weighs 905 pounds
  • The Hubble Telescope was launched

    The Hubble Telescope was launched
    The Hubble Telescope is used to take extremely sharp photos in outer space without distortion from the atmosphere or light pollution from the city lights. It was placed in orbit by the space shuttle Discovery on Apr.24th, 1990. It uses a large hyperbolic mirror, which is 2.4 metres in diameter, to take highly detailed digital photos. It gets its electrical power from the two large solar panels on each side of the telescope. It is named after astronomer Edwin Hubble.

    The International Space Station is a large spacecraft that orbits around the Earth. The space station is made of many pieces or modules. The modules were put together in space by astronauts of Russia and the United States or NASA. The space station is still being added to today as it was supposed to be finished in 2006. The delay is mainly due to cost overruns. Many countries which include United States, Russia, Canada, Europe and Japan fund and use the station to learn more about living, explor

    The First Mars Rover was launched
    The Mars Rover was launched to search for a wide range of rocks and soils that hold clues to past water activity on Mars. Water is considered important because it is the key to life as we know it. The rover weighs 2 341 pounds, is 8.7 feet in diameter and is 5.2 feet tall. There was also another Rover launched to Mars on July 7, 2003. The first one landed on January 3, 2004 and the second Rover landed on the opposite side of Mars from the first Rover on January 24, 2004.

    Dextre was invented to do maintenance work and repairs like changing batteries and replacing cameras outside the International Space Station. Its full name is “Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator”. The arms are 11 feet long and the body is 3.5 metres long.
