Space Inventions

  • Sputnik 1

Sputnik was launched on October 4, 1957 by the U.S.S.R. It weighed 83.6 pounds. It was about the size of a beach ball and took 98 minutes to orbit earth in its path. Sputnik was the first satellite in space.
  • Mariner 4

It was launched on July 4, 1965. The first satellite to do a flyby of mars. Making it the first satellite to take up close pictures of another planet. It got images of lunar type craters. It lasted three years in space even though NASA did not expect it to last much past the flyby of Mars.
  • Mariner 6 and 7

Mariner 6 was launched on February 24, 1969 and Mariner 7 on March 27, 1969. They went on a compressed mission to mars as two satellites. They flew over the equator and the south polar regions. They had a mission type of flyby. Both of them had close flybys. On Mariner 7 a battery exploded on board. It still took more pictures then Mariner 6 with the exploded battery
  • Apollo 11

It was launched on July 16, 1969. It held Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, Edwin Buzz. It was the first person-carrying spaceship to land on the moon. That made the phrase one small step for man one giant leap for mankind.
  • Canadarm

It landed on January, 2004. They ended planning for Spirit on May 25, 2011. It was marked as one of the most successful missions. Spirit last communicated on March 22, 2010. It drove a total of 7.73 km. The front right tire became immobile in 2006. When going backwards with the immobile tire it uncovered a white dust that was nearly pure sulphur.
  • Discovery

Its first mission was in August of 1984.Discovery was NASA’s third spaceship that could be reused as a winged spaceship. It deployed the Hubble Space Telescope in April, 1990.
  • Hubble Space Telescope

It was deployed into orbit on April 25, 1990 from the spaceship Discovery. The 20th anniversary for being in orbit was on April 24, 2010. It returns tons of pictures back to earth a year. The Hubble is now out-dated and they may send a new space telescope into space to replace Hubble.
  • Spirit

It landed on January, 2004. They ended planning for Spirit on May 25, 2011. It was marked as one of the most successful missions. Spirit last communicated on March 22, 2010.
