Space Exploration Timeline

  • The First Telescope

They are many theories as to who really invented, but most people say that it is Dutch eyeglass maker, Hans Lippershey.
  • The First Telescopic Photo of Another World: Moon

The first photograph from Earth of another world was of the moon, and it gave scientists a better insight on what some other planets look like.
  • The First Photo From Space

    The First Photo From Space
The first photo from space was taken from an altitude of 65 miles by a 35-millimeter motion picture camera riding on a V-2 missile launched from the White Sands Missile Range. It was the first real photo of Earth.
  • The First Animal In Space

    The First Animal In Space
The first animal in space was an insect; a fruit fly that was launched in rocket from the White Sands Missile Range in the United States. This experiment was to test the effects of radiation exposure in high altitudes.
  • The First Monkey In Space

    The First Monkey In Space
The first monkey in space was launched by the United States and was a rhesus monkey by the name of Albert
  • The First Dog In Space

    The First Dog In Space
The first dog in space was a Soviet Space Dog by the name of Laika
  • The First Man in Space

    The First Man in Space
The first man in space was a Russian Soviet Union Colonal by the name of Yuri Gagarin
  • The First Woman In Space

    The First Woman In Space
The first woman in space was Russian former astronaut Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova
  • The First Spacewalk

    The First Spacewalk
The first spacewalk was performed by Alexey Leonov, a Soviet astronaut.
  • The First Space Rover

    The First Space Rover
The first space rover to be built was Soviet made, and was called Lunokhod 0, sadly it never made it to space due to crashing during a failed start launcher.
  • The First Space Shuttle Launch

The first manned space shuttle launch was of the Space Transportation System in Columbia. This test was to try and figure out the spacecraft's systems and how they worked when launched.
  • The First Landing on an Asteroid

The first landing on an astronaut was by the NEAR spacecraft on the asteroid Eros. It was never designed to land on the asteroid, but it did, and was able to bring back lots of information on asteroids.
  • The First Landing on Alien Moon

The first landing on an alien moon was made by the probe Huygens which landed on Saturn's largest moon, Titan. For the first time, scientists could get to look at a surface of a moon other than ours.
  • The First Commercial Orbit and Return

A company called SpaceX was able to become the first private company to have commercial orbits and safe returns to Earth. Normal people, who had lots of money, were able to take a look at Earth from a much farther distance and see the true beauty that the Earth has.
  • The First Skydive Jump to Break the Sound Barrier

The first skydive to break the sound barrier was an Australian skydiver named Felix Baumgartner. He didn't even use a jet or spacecraft, he is taken up by a capsule attached to a helium balloon, and the only way for him to get down was to jump. It showed that from a height of 24 miles up, a human could survive the fall.
  • The First Spacecraft to Orbit a Dwarf Planet

The first spacecraft to orbit a dwarf planet was by NASA's Dawn spacecraft that was able to orbit around the dwarf planet Ceres. It gave a bigger insight as to the classification of dwarf planets and what they are like.
