This began the space race.This success shocked the world because it showed how we can launch satelites and nuclear rockets into space.The word Sputnik originally meant "fellow" traveler but has now become synonymous to satelite. The launching of Sputnik 1 created a whole new world of technology.

    Laika and in Russia that means "Barker."
    Her acheivment proves that living things such humans can survive in space.

    satellitte launched into space for America.It also
    orbited the earth and collected scientific data.This Satellite proved that the U.S. is catching up the Soviets in space exploration.

    appeared to be beating the Space Race.

    as a pilot on his Faith 7 capsule. He
    orbited the earth 22 times and was
    in space longer than all the previous
    five Mercury astronauts combined.

    astronaunt to sleep in orbit on his
    mission.

    for three days alone, she was the first woman in space. Tereshkova was within
    three miles of Veleri Bykovsky on Vostok
    5 which is the closest two space crafts passed while in orbit.

    Mentalfloss.com Luna 15 was made by the Soviet Union Its mission was to land, collect samples of the moons surface and then return.The collected samples would have been the first robotic samples returned to Earth .Luna 15 ended up crashing and was not able to return the samples. Apollo 11 was orbiting in space at the same time as Luna 15.

Apollo 11 launched July 16 carrying Neil Armstrong, Micheal Collings, and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin. A while after launch Armstrong took step on the moon and 20 min. later Aldrin followed him. They both spent 21 hours and 36 min. on the moon's surface.
