The soviets launch sputik on October 4, 1957. This was very threatning to the United States because if they could launch sputnik they could launch nuclear bombs/weapons. -

On January 31, 1958 the United states launched their own satelite called Explorer 1. So now Russia wasnt the only ones who launched a satelite. -

on April 12, 1961 Russian Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space and to orbit the earth. this waws important to space exploration because we now knew we can send people into space. -

May 5, 1961 Alan Shepard became the first American in space. He rode Freedom 7. This is important because president John F. Kennedy now knew that he was sending a man to the moon. -

On April 24, 1967 Cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov was killed on the crash back down to earth on Soyuz 1. This gave the soviets a lot more warning and saftey percausions about space craft travel. -
First man on the moon!
On July 21, 1969 Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon. He is from the United States and he rode Apollo 11. This event soon ended the space race. -
Apollo 17
On December 9, 1972 There was an Apollo 17 mission that would have the longest stay by man on the moon which was 74 hours and 59 minutes. The U.S. now knew humans can stay on the moon for longer than neil armstrong did. -

On May 14, 1973 Skylab 1 was launched into space and now the U.S. could do even more research about outer space. -
Docking a space shuttle!
On May 29, 1999 Discovery becomes the first space shuttleto dock at a international space station and they now knew they could go out and come back to the space station on a space shuttle safley. -
America and Russia
On November 2, 2000 An American and Russian crew start living abroad a space station so they could work together and learn and explore even more about outer space.
