    The soviets launch sputik on October 4, 1957. This was very threatning to the United States because if they could launch sputnik they could launch nuclear bombs/weapons.

    On January 31, 1958 the United states launched their own satelite called Explorer 1. So now Russia wasnt the only ones who launched a satelite.

    May 5, 1961 Alan Shepard became the first American in space. He rode Freedom 7. This is important because president John F. Kennedy now knew that he was sending a man to the moon.

    On April 24, 1967 Cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov was killed on the crash back down to earth on Soyuz 1. This gave the soviets a lot more warning and saftey percausions about space craft travel.

    On December 9, 1972 There was an Apollo 17 mission that would have the longest stay by man on the moon which was 74 hours and 59 minutes. The U.S. now knew humans can stay on the moon for longer than neil armstrong did.
