A Walk to the History of Space

  • First Telescope

First telescope was invented by the Dutch eyeglass maker Hans Lippershey in 1608. Since then many changed to its design have improved its lights collecting capabilies.

    Timeline

Timeline of all the important events in the history of space
  • Sputnik 1

Sputnik 1 was the first satellite in orbit around the Earth launched by Russia. Helped the space age properly begin.
  • Russian Space Dog

Laika becomes the first animal to orbit the Earth. Her mission helped scientists understand whether people could survive in space.
  • NASA is Born

The National Asteronautics and Space Administration was founded. NASA helped make all the research much simpler and everyone worked together in groups to research and learn about space.
  • Solar Orbit

The Russian satellite Luna 1 is launched in an attempt to hit the Moon but the space-craft misses the moon and is flung out into space by the Moon's gravity. It becomes the first man-made object to achieve an orbit around the Sun
  • First Weather Satellite

Tiros 1, the first successful weather satellite is launched by United States. Tiros 1 was the first successful low-Earth orbital weather satellite, and the first of a series of Television Infrared Observation Satellites.
  • First American in Space

Alan Shephard becomes the first American in space on a suborbital flight lasting 15 minutes and 28 seconds. Twenty days after this achievement President John F Kennedy pledges that America will send a man to moon before the end of the decade.
  • First American to orbit the Earth

John Glenn, aboard Friendship 7 becomes the first American to orbit the Earth. He circled the Globe three times during a flight lasting 4 hours, 55 minutes and 23 seconds.
  • First Woman in Space

The first woman is Space was Valentina Tereshkova. On 16 June 1963 she became the fifith Russian cosmonaut to orbit the Earth. It wasn't common for women to go to space but she was the first woman in Space!
  • First Space Walk

The cosmonaut Alexei Leonov was the first person to walk in space. He left his Voshkod 2 space-craft and stayed outside for 24 minutes.
  • First U.S. Space tragedy

As the U.S. is gearing up for its three men Apollo missions, a fire breaks out in a routine ground test. Astronauts Gud Grisson, Ed White and Roger Chaffee died as the blaze, ignited by the faulty wiring. This tragedy helped future missions as they used a different, less flammable atmosphere.
  • First human in space

Yuri Gagarin, a Soviet cosmonaut orbited the Earth once in the Vostok 1 spacecraft. It was the first space flight by a person.
  • First Manned Moon Landing

Neil Armstrong and then Buzz Aldrin took "one small step" and became the first men on the moon fulfilling John F Kennedy’s goal of reaching the moon by the end of 60’s Their spaceship, Apollo 11 worked perfectly, flying the 250,000 miles to the moon and bringing them all the way back safely to earth.
  • Apollo 13

Two days into its journey to the moon Apollo 13 suffered an explosion caused by a wiring fault. Using only whatever was on board, NASA scientists and the astronauts on board improvised repairs to bring the crippled spaceship home. This event can help in the future if any wiring fault occurs NASA knows how to save astronauts in space using whatever is on board.
  • First Space Shuttle Launch

The Space Shuttle was designed to be reused for up to 100 visits to a space, in an attempt to make space travel less expensive. Space Shuttle helped save money.
  • Space Shuttle Challenger

Space Shuttle Challenger exploded shortly after launch, because of a fuel system failure. All seven astronauts on board were killed and all shuttles were grounded for nearly three years. This shocking accident reminded the world of the dangers of space travel and the incredible bravery of all astronauts.
  • Family Potrait

The Family Portrait or Portrait of the Planets is an image of the Solar System received by Voyager 1 on February 14, 1990 from a distance of approximately 6 billion kilometres from Earth. It helped astronauts with how the solar system looks like.
  • ISS

The first permanent crew moved into the International Space Station (ISS), where crews of astronauts have been living ever since. The ISS is a huge space station for research and space explorations that began construction in 1986 and finished in 2010.
  • MOST

The smallest telescope in orbit Microvariability and Oscillations of STars . It is Canada's first space telescope.
  • Water on the Moon

Chandrayaan discovered water on the moon. Using data collected by India’s Chandrayaan mission, NASA has detected magmatic water locked under the surface of the Moon.
