  • Land Act

    Land Act
    Prevented Blacks from buying outside land reserves. It was the first piece of major legislation passed by the Union Parliament. It stopped white farmers from buying more native land.
  • National Party (NP) was founded

    National Party (NP) was founded
    An Afrikaner Nationalist party which sought to promote their ideas in a time of oppression. Wanted Afrikaner's interests to be heard
  • Immorality Act

    Immorality Act
    Designed to keep external sexual relations from happening between whites and other races. Wanted to keep the white race pure.
  • The Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act is passed

    The Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act is passed
    Made it illegal for white South Africans to marry those of other races, Designed to promote the separation of races
  • The Population Registration Act

    The Population Registration Act
    Required each inhabitant of South Africa to classify and register according to their racial characteristics
  • Group Areas Act

    Group Areas Act
    Designed to bring about total residential segregation. It also removed non-whites from inner city areas that would be designed as Whites-only area. Called the "essence of apartheid by Malan
  • Bantu Authorities Act

    Bantu Authorities Act
    Created new regional authorizes for Africans, which were based in reserves and dispensed with the old Natives Representative Council
  • Pass Laws Act

    Pass Laws Act
    This act was another means of enforcing the segregation of populations. This new law made the documents which Africans were required to carry more comprehensive and complex requiring them to be on them at all times.
  • Bantu Self-Government Act

    Bantu Self-Government Act
    Allowed for traditional tribal lands to form into independent states of Bantustans. Was designed to further the policy of grand apartheid.
  • Extension of University Education Act

    Extension of University Education Act
    Introduced to extend apartheid to tertiary education. It brought an end to to universities registering students of all races into their courses
  • The Transkei Act

    The Transkei Act
    This law gave partial self-government to the Transkei within the republic of South Africa. It provided for a legislative assembly to take control over almost everything.
