But the samples he had were not good enough. He needed some of the crew's hair and nails. He needed hair and nails from Beechey Island, where John Torrington was.

    Beattie went to Beechey Island to get samples from Torrington's body. He set up camp with a team of researchers. It took them days to hack through the ice that covered his coffin and his body. It has been 138 years. They took the samples of organs, bones, fingernails, and hair. Also, they left a note saying what they had done. The lead had not killed the men but the mans body's where weak to fight off other problems they had. Like tuberculosis and pneumonia.
