It was based on the idea that a great online community can be formed between people who have similar interests and gave people a way to find others who had similar interests.

2003 - LinkedIn was a more serious form of social media that was designed as a networking resource for professional business people who wanted to get to know other business people. Today, LinkedIn has more than 297 million members

2004 – Facebook, today’s most popular social networking site was created. Facebook has more than 1.3 billions users today. It became the most popular because it is easy to use, has game apps to keep users interesting, and had a lot of investment to keep it ahead of its competition.

2006 - Twitter was formed. Twitter allows its users to send out 140 character messages called Tweets. It is revolutionary because it changed how people got news and information from businesses, entertainers and everyday friends.

2007 onwards – Cellular telephone technology becomes more and more cheap. All of the sites were able to get more users because more people could afford cell phones that could go on the internet and allow them to connect with each other.
