    He was born on July 20 in Auckland, NZ. Before his name was “Sir Edmund Hillary” it was Edmund Percival Hillary. His Father was Percival Augustus Hillary, but he was called Percy. His mother was Gertrude Hillary and her maiden name was Clark.

    His family moved to Tuakau, a really small town in the south of Auckland. His father was sent to eight acres of land to come back as a soldier of the 15th regiment.

    When he was 16, Hillary went on a school trip to Mount Ruapehu. That was when he got interested in mountains.

    When he was 20, he climbed his first major mountain. He reached the peak of Mt Oliver in the Canterbury region. It was 6342 feet which is about 1933 meters.

    He is enrolled to join the New Zealand Air Force for World War II.
