    Instead of taking a grueling 800-mile open-boat journey to the whaling station on South Georgia Island, Shack decided to make it to Elephant Island first.

    Shack and his men reached Elephant Island. He decided to leave 22 of his men behind and take the 5 most able on an 800 mile journey on the worst winter seas anywhere on Earth.

    The Caird and the 6 men on it, were attacked by the monstrous wave. Luckily no one was seriously injured.

    The men spotted South Georgia Island but were unable to land safely on the rocky beach of King Haakon Bay because they were stuck in a massive hurricane for nine awful hours.
  • Three men walk to find signs of life

    Once on South Georgia Island, Shack and two of the men were able to climb jagged mountainous terrain to find the whaling station to get help for the other men.
  • Rescued Men

    Shack and the two men talked to the men at the whaling station and were able to rescue the other three men on the other side of the island the next day. It took more than three months for Shack and the other men to break through the winter pack ice and save the men from Elephant Island. After four attemps, Shack was successful and no lives were lost.
