MacArthur retreated south of the Seoul. This was the farthest retreat in U.S. history. It was a cold winter and The U.S. forces didn't know what to do. MacArthur offered the use of atomic weapons to end the war once and for all.

General Matthew Ridgway not only stopped the Koreans, but went on an offensive. Pushed then back to the 38th parallel. This questioned MacArthur's offer of using atomis weapons.

Truman needed to make a decide if he was going to fire MacArthur. MacArthur has questioned Truman, and thinks that this was needs to widen. Truman fires the WWII hero and the media and the public does not like it.

The UN tries to negotiate peace and set boundaries. The UN wants it to be a little north of the 38th parallel but the communists insist it is directly on the parallel. Therefore, peace talk ends.

Both UN and Korea try to improve their position. Neither are trying to gain land. The battles of Bloody Ridge and Heartbreak Ridge both were gruesome. Korea and the UN took turns winning key hilltops, the losses were heavy. Over 40,000 UN casualties.

Negotiations continue in October but are held up. The Syngman Rhee refused to send North Korean or Chinese prisoners back to communist countries. This slowed peace in the East.

All of 1952 was peace talk in the town of Panmunjom, and small-scale fighting caused thousands of casualties.

Eisenhower's first goal was to end the war. He did this on July 27, but the fighting was fierce up until that day.
