    imageWorld War 1 did not just appear. It was started by nationalism through-out the Euorpian countries. Countries have been making agreements to back each other up called alliances and some countries are rivialries. What caused the war to officially start was when a man from Serbia invaded Austria-Hungry and killed their archduke. All the countries took sides. The war had just begun.

    imageDuring the war soldiers dug deep trenches to avoid enemy fire. In 1919 The Central Powers surrendered. Germany and Austria-Hungary were forced to except the Treaty of Versailles. It said that the central powers had to pay lots of money and follow certain restrictions.

    Vladmir Lenin took power in 1918 and changed government to communis. Many people supported this idea until Lenin died in 1924. At this time Joseph Stalin came to power and killed over ten million people. He also set up brutal prison camps, until his rule was over in 1953.

The people showed their wealth by going to movies every night, going to fancy restaurants and dancing all night. Woman would wear fancy gowns and people bought electronics and new art forms such as jazz flourished. Everyone was happy.

    imageIn the early 1930s economy in many places including America collapsed. The banks started lending more than they had. The banks started to go under and many people were losing their monet and becoming very poor. 1933 was the point when the stock market was at its lowest.

    imageWhen the Great Depression took place President Henry Hoover was blamed. People would head south when they lost all of their homes and they would build houses out of anything they could find. They named them Hoovervilles after the president during this time.

    Between 1933-1938 Roosevelt's new deal included series of programs that involved laws passed by congress and presidential executive orders during FDR's first term. This deal focused on the Great Depression historians: relief, recovery, and reform. This deal was to help the poor and to prevent a repeat of the Great Depression.

He told the people that he knew a way to get them out and the people accepted. Hitler and the Nazis promised the citizins to make Germany great again. Soon Hitler took control of all the countries around him.

    Between 1939-1945 the Nazis tried to destroy large groups of Jews. The Nazis sent the Jews and other minorities to concentration camps. In the camp prisoners were often tortured, or simple killed. The Nazis treated them horribly. They killed about 6 million Jews.

    imageAfter Germany surrendered U.S. President Harry S. Truman decided to drop an atomic bomb in two Japanese cities, Hiroshima and Nagasak. The aromic bomb was so powereful that it killed over 100,000 people. The Japanese surrendered on September 2, 1945

    imageIn 1950 communist North Korea invaded non-communist South Korea. This started the Korean War. During this war United States and other democratic countries sent troops to support South Korea. The Chinese supported North Korea. The war ended in 1953 in stalemate.

    imageDuring the Cold War Vietnam split into two parts. North Vietnam was communist and South Vietnam was non-communist. The US sent troops to support the South to fight off all the communist rooters in North Vietnam. This was one of two "hot" wars during this time.

    imageThe Cold War ended in 1991 when Communism in the Soviet Union collapsed. It also ended because capitalism produced more wealth than communism. After 1991 when the Cold War ended Russia adapted capitalism and the Soviet union broke up into several independent nations.
