    He got married in 1877 with Molnár Gizella. They had 2 sons Wekerle Sándor (academic lecturer, politician, Member of Parliament, Minister of Finance) and dr. Wekerle Géza (lawyer, military hussar regiment)

  • House of Deputies

    He was elected to the House of Deputies in 1886. It was the begining of his carrier

    He became Financial Secretary of State before becoming Minister of Finance.

    Minister of Finance

    He bacame Minister of Finance during the Tisza Government. He reorganized the financial administration, introduced taxes on sugar, alcohol and a comsumption tax and tobacco excise. State revenues significantly increased.

    Francis Joseph appointed him Prime Minister. He was the firs one with citizen origin.
    He created the full balance of public finances and the conditions for the transition to gold and arranged the Civil Marriage Act. In 1895 the jewish religion became legally actepted and they gained political rights as well.

    Separated the state and the church. It was rejected by the Upper House so he resigned.

    Prime Minister

    He became Prime Minister for the second time from 1906 till 1910 after Khuen-Héderváry Károly. He was also Minister of Finance and, for a time, Minister of Defense and Justice. He passed a law on industrial development, workers' insurance and further tax reforms were enacted. He proposed separate Austrian and Hungarian central banks, but as this did not happen, he resigned again.

    He was Prime MInister for the third time from 1917 till 1918. He was also Minister of Finance, Minister of Agriculture and Minister of the Interior during this period. He organized the 48-as Alkotmánypárt which was a short-lasting election party.

    Death
    He died in 1921 at Budapest at the age of 72. The Wekerle estate (Wekerletelep) in Budapest's XIX. district is named after him.
