Teresa was fascinated by the lives of the saints so she ran away from home at the age of 7 with her brother to find martyrdom among the moors.

When Teresa was 14, her mother died, causing Teresa to grief that made her embrace a deeper devotion to the Virgin Mary as her spiritual mother.

Teresa was entrusted to the care of the Augustinian nuns. After she read the letters of Saint Jerome, She resolved to enter a religious life. In 1535, She joined the carmelite order, she spent a number of years in the convent.

St Teresa of Avila died on October 4 1582 at the age of 67, She died in Alba de Tormes in the arms of her secretary and close friend Blessed Anne of Saint Bartholomew. Her body has been exhumed many times after her death and every time found sweet-smelling, firm and incorrupt.
