    The Russia was attacked by Germany, without warning in 1941 this was called Operation Barbarossa. The Russian army collapsed from this attack which was initially very successful however the tables turned once winter came because Hitler did not believe the war would last that long. German soldiers froze to death in their sleep so their forces retreated back to Germany. Even with their victory though the people of Russia suffered greatly during the war. Well over 20 million were killed.

    During the Cold War there wasn’t really any fighting because the consequences would have been too great. The Cold War was more of a series of arguments although a nuclear war was close to breaking out during the Cuban Missile Crisis. This was when the Russian’s started building missiles in Cuba as a way to deter the United States from launching an attack on Russia. But John Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev negotiated and war was averted.

    The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 was the Soviet Union intervening in support of the Afghan communist government in its conflict with anticommunist Muslim guerrillas during Afghan War (1978-92). Although they did poorly in keeping the Muslims at bay. By 1985 the Muslims controlled 85% of Afghanistan even though they were fighting one of the world’s greater powers. The Russian’s were no match for the extremely loyal Muslims especially in the Afghan Mountains.

    The First Chechen War was a conflict between the Russians and the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, fought from December 1994 to August 1996. Russian forces tried to gain control of Chechnya but were set back by Chechen guerrilla warfare. A ceasefire was put into place in 1996 and a peace treaty was signed a year later.

    • The Second Chechen War was started by the Russians on 26 August 1999, because of the Invasion of Dagestan by the Islamic International Peacekeeping Brigade. On 1 October Russian troops entered Chechnya. This ended the independence of Chechen Republic of Ichkeria and restored Russian control over the territory. On 16 April 2009, the war in Chechnya was officially ended, as the main bulk of the army was withdrawn.

    During 2008 border disputes between Georgia and South Ossetia led Georgia to begin a major military offensive against South Ossetia which prompted Russia to intervene against Georgia. Through mediation by the French presidency of the European Union, the countries reached a ceasefire agreement on 12 August. Several weeks after signing the ceasefire agreement, Russia began to withdraw troops from Georgia.
