The chronological overview of English literature

  • Period: 450 to 1066

    Old English (Anglo-Saxon)

    Most of the literature of this period was oral. Much of the prose of this time was a translation of something else, such as religious or medical texts. Even so, works such as Beuwulf, and the lost poets Cedmon and Cynewulf.
  • Period: 1066 to 1500

    Middle English Period

    Like the previous era, most of the texts dealt with religion and other aspects, however, the Sercular literature arose, appearing authors such as Chaucer, and Thomas Malory. Outstanding works such as "Piers Plowman" and "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight."
  • Period: 1500 to

    The Renaissance

    Unlike previous eras, in the Renaissance, there was more interest in human behavior making their plays based on it rather than religious writings. It was the golden age of English theater, with drama, revenge and comedy as the main genres. Prominent figures such as Christopher Marlowe, Francis Bacon, Edmund Spenser, William Shakespeare, John Fletcher and Francis Beaumont.

    The Neoclassical Period

    During this time literature was gradually taken as a theoretical basis, contributing to critical works such as those of the auto John Dryden.
    The ideas of neoclassicism, criticism, literature and enlightenment were strongly advocated during the era. As prominent authors we can find Daniel Defoe, Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu.

    The romantic period

    It begins with the publication of the book Lyrical Ballads by William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor. This period was characterized by creativity, rejection of the bourgeoisie and liberalism. Prominent authors such as Lord Byron, John Keats, Percy and Bysshe Shelley.

    The Victorian Period

    This period was characterized by strong social, religious and economic issues. It is one of the most influential periods of English literature, we can find poets such as Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Christina Rossetti and Matthew Arnold, fiction authors such as Charles Dickens, Charlotte and Emily Bronte, Elizabeth Gaskell, among others.

    The Edwardian Period

    This short period was characterized by the publication of a large number of short stories and novels. Renowned authors such as Ford Madox Ford, Rudyard Kipling, H.G. Wells, among others.

    The Georgian Period

    It is characterized by Georgian poetry, the theme of which used to be rural nature, delicacy and tradition with passion. Some Georgian poets were Ralph Hodgson, John Masefield, W.H. Davies, and Rupert Brooke.

    The Mordern Period

    This period was characterized by experimentation with themes, style and form, such as narrative, verse and drama. It is also at this time that the new criticism appeared. Well-known authors of this period include James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Aldous Huxley, D.H. Lawrence, among others; poets such as T.S. Eliot, W.H. Auden, Seamus Heaney, Wilfred Owens, Dylan Thomas.It is difficult to say that modernism is over.

    The Postmodern Period

    This period saw the development of post-structuralist literary theory and criticism, with authors such as Samuel Beckett, Joseph Heller, Anthony Burgess. It is said that this period ended around 1990, but it is still too early to prove if it was so.
