    From medieval ages until the end of the 19th century (1400-1850), most of the houses had only one room or two. In those rooms they made their principal tasks, cooking, sleeping, etc.
  • Half of the 20th century (1925-1975)

    In the half of the 20th century rooms were starting to appear in houses.
  • Starting the 21st century (2000)

    Starting the 21st century  (2000)
    Starting the 21st century the average of rooms in a house was 5, 34. This helped to born the concept that we know about rooms in houses, because before everything was mixed in a single room without any sign of art in rooms.

    This helped to change attitudes as: privacy, cleanliness and class. However, as with everything we want to break with the past. Now the trend is to have an open concept of the house as in the medieval ages. So, we could say it’s breaking the trend that started in the 20st century in the Victorian age.

    Living room: The concept of living room “was born” arround 17th century. In the 18th century everyone aspired to have a room purely for best. Nowadays living rooms are getting smaller because designers are making bigger rooms to en-suite them with bathroomor to have utility rooms and studies.

    Bathroom: Everybody calls it the youngest room, because it has become a separated room in the last 100 years. It has evolved not too much because before it was a separated room, few people used it because their attitude to cleanliness changed. First they thought that germs entered through the skin while you were tanking a bath. Hollywood helped to give a new image to the bathrooms beacuse everybody appeared in the bathrooms taking a relaxing bath. So it turned into a place where people relaxed,

    Kitchen: In medieval times this was the heart of the house. It gave heat to all the house. Before it was functional, and now it’s a social space. The evolution was curious. First, in medieval times, the kitchen was attached to all rooms.     Bedroom: The idea of the bedrooms started in medieval times. Then your main concerns were to be warm and safe so you’d like to share room with anybody. Now everybody wants to have a private space so shared rooms aren’t as practical that were before.
