  • "Peace through Strength"

    Warmed relations with the Soviet Union which eventually ended the Cold War. Negotiated a treaty for nuclear missiles. Ended up increasing deficit spending by 35%.
  • Reaganomics

    Excessive government regulaton, cut taxes on the rich, and massive social spending. The "trickle down" affect was the money that he saved the rich would go down to the poor and help them as well.
  • War Against Terrorism

    The War on Terror started the day Reagan was inaugurated when 52 American hostages were released from Iran. He also had a 1983 retreat from Beirut and his administration in 1985-86 transferred arms to Tehran.

  • Conservative Judges

    Reagan promised in his 1980 campaign, that when the time came he would apoint the first woman Supreme Court Justice. Appointed Sandra O'Connor. Reagan said he would only appoint people who opposed abortion. People thought he would only select people who be against women and minorities.
  • Cutting Social Programs

    Social Security, Medicaid, Food Stamps, Federal Education Systems, and Environmental Protection Agency were either cut or had reduced funding.
  • "Star Wars"

    The goal of the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) was to make the US invulnerable to the Soviet Union if there was a missile attack. This would be done by putting missiles in space and vaporizing the Soviet's attack by using lasers. Soviet leaders became concerned, but the technology was unattainable.
  • Reagan Doctrine

    Offered financial and logistical aid to anit-communist groups. Funded groups such as Contras in Nicaragua, the Mujahideen in Afghanistan, and UNITA in Angola. Sent CIA to help the Mujaideen against the Soviet forces.
  • "Terrorist Bombing"

    Libya had a bomb in Berlin that exploded and injured 63 and killed 1 US military men, so Reagan authorized an attack. The US then launched a series of air strikes against ground targets and the UK let us use their Air Force Base. Reagan addressed the country from the Oval Office and the UN later voted on it.
  • Tax Reform Act of 1986

    Increased tax rates on lower incomes, decreased deductions, and raised tax revenue. Considered one of the most controversial stories of it's time.
  • Windfall Profit Tax

    Repealed the tax President Carter had put on domestic oil. It had made an increase on the dependence of foreign oil. He had promised it in his 1980 campaign, and he came through with his promise.
