Road to the Revolutionary War

  • Start of the French and Indian Wars

    -Start of the 7 years war
    -Cost a lot of money for Britain
  • End of the French and Indian War

    -Treaty of Paris is signed
    -Britain must find a way to get money back from what was spent on the war
  • Proclamation of 1763

    -Settlers were no longer allowed to settle further west than the Appalachians.
    -This was created to avoid another war with the Native Americans
  • Sugar Act

    -The first law passed to tax the colonists
    -They did not like this, their power was taken away from them
    -This was to help pay for the war
    - They were removed after colonists protested
  • Stamp Act

    -Now colonists were to be taxed on stamps and things that are shipped or imported from other places
    -Also taxed on documents and household items
    -You had to put stamps on certain items
  • Quartering Act

    -Colonists now had to help provide food and sometimes shelter for British soldiers sent over to the colonies
  • Stamp Act Congress

    -A group of colonists from different colonies met to discuss the Stamp Act
    -They sent a request to England to get it repealed
    -The request was ignored
    -This was a step in unity between colonies
  • Declatory Act

    -Britain drew the line and said that they have complete control of the colonies
    -Took away freedom that the colonies had
    -Displeased the colonies very much
  • Townshend Acts

    -New taxes on many common goods
    -This was an indirect tax
    -Profit went to the checks of government workers
    -People were not happy about these
  • Boston Massacre

    -British soldiers who were being harrased in the streets of Boston killed those threatening them
    -Very controversial and important in the road to the Revolution
    -Killed and wounded many
  • Boston Tea Party

    -A group of rebels threw tea off of a ship into the ocean
    -The did this to protest the Tea Tax
    -Britain and the King were very very angry about this
  • Intolerable Acts

    -Many new laws placed on the colonies by Britain
    -The colonists thought these to be intolerable
    - Some inlcluded taxes, getting rid of local government, etc.
  • The First Continental Congress

    -A group of powerful people from almost all the colonies met
    -They decided what they could and would do about what has been happening lately
    -Eventually this group makes the Declaration and sends it to the King
