  • Missouri compromise

    Northern and southern politicians have heated debates over growth of slavery.
  • Nullification crisis

    Southern states felt that tariffs were unfair and only supported the north.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Congress had many heated debates. The new territories won from Mexico would be admitted as slave states or free states. Henry clay helped mak a compromise. California would be admitted as a free state. Congress would not pass laws banning slavery from the rest of the territories.
  • Fugitive slave act

    Passed in 1850 by congress. Act permitted capture of African-Americans who had fled to the north to escape bondage. the laws set stage for John Brown's raid and the American civil war
  • Uncle toms cabin

    On March 20 of 1852 the historical book uncle toms cabin was published by Harriet Beecher Stowe.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    5000 people were nearby pro slaverly Missouri came and voted for proslavery representativesin Kansas illegally.
  • Dred Scott decision

    Dred Scott was a slave who sued for his freedom. Congress ended up declaring the missuri compromise of 1820 unconstitutional.
  • Attack on harpers ferry

    John brown wanted to encourage slaves to fight for their freedom. He planned to capture the arsenal. Brown and his men were captured. Abolishionists saluted John brown as he was put to death.
  • Election of 1860

    Abraham Lincoln wins the election. Southern states begin to secede from the union from the union shortly after Lincoln is elected.
