    Tea and the American Colonies

    The first tea was brought into England in 1661. Tea was so popular with the colonists and it was insanely cheap so everybody could get some. By 1770 everyone was drinking tea.
  • Molasses Act

    Molasses Act
    This act taxed the colonists for all molasses brought into the colonies. The colonists were pleased by this act because they did not have to pay taxes for other things just molasses.
  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act
    This was a tax placed on everyone in the colonies whether you were rich or poor, you had to pay a tax on every piece of paper, ink, playing cards, and dice.

    The Townshend Act
    This new act taxed everything that was considered glass, painter's colors, and lead.

    Smuggling on the High Seas: John Hancock and the Liberty Affair
    Colonists loved tea, it was all they drank. But most did not want to pay for taxes. They started finding new ways to get their tea imported from sellers other than the East India Company like smuggling it in. By 1773 more than 3/4 of the tea colonists drank came from Holland.
  • The Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre
    What started as a street brawl between a few local workers and some redcoats turned into a bloody massacre. This massacre left five Bostonians dead in the street.
  • The Tea Act

    This act made sure the East India Company and Parliament. It forced colonists to buy tea from the East India Company only and no smuggling was tolerated.
  • The Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party
    The Sons of Liberty, was the name of the group responsible for The Boston Tea Party. The hoisted up crates of the East India Company Tea, and didn't stop until all 340 crates of tea were in the harbor. The Boston Tea Party was the most important event that caused the American Revolution.
