    Conception occurs when sperm and egg unite afte sexual intercoarse.

    Month 1
    The baby is the size of a pinhead and the heart is the size of a poppy seed. The mother misses a period.

    Lasts from conception until fertilized egg is implanted in mothers uterus.

    Lasts from 2 weeks after conception until 2 months after conception.
  • Month 2

    Month 2
    Embryo is one inch long, the veins are visible, and the heart is divided into chambers. Mother has increased urination, swelling breasts, and nausea.
  • Month 3

    Month 3
    Baby is 2 inches long and organs and muscles are formed. Mother gains weight, has nausea, and full breasts.

    Period of the Fetus

    Lasts from end of two months of pregnancy until birth.
  • Month 4

    Month 4
    Baby is covered with thick, downy hair called lanugo. Mothers appetite increases and morning sickness is gone.

  • Month 5

    Month 5
    Protective coating called vernix caseosa forms on babys skin and the baby is 6.5-7 inches long weighing 4-5 ounces. Mother has enlarged abdomen that may affect posture. Fetal movements can be felt and the heartbeat can be heard through a stethoscope.

    Month 6
    The babys eyebrows and eyelids are visible, lungs filled are filled with amniotic fluid and the baby has started breathing motions. The baby is 8-10 inches long and weighs 8-12 ounces. Mother senses fetal movements as strong kicks and total weight gain is 10-12 pounds.

    Third trimester

  • Month 7

    Month 7
    Baby weighs 1.5-2 pounds and is 10-12 inches long. Mothers posture is affected by increased size in weight.
  • Month 8

    Month 8
    Baby is gaining half a pound per week and is turned head down in preperation for birth. Baby weighs 2.5-3 pounds and is 14-16 inches long. Mother has discomfort from enlarged abdomen and is 18-20 pounds larger.
  • Month 9

    Month 9
    Baby has less room for movement. Baby weighs 5-6 lbs and is 17-18 inches long. Mother feels lightening as fetus drops into pelvis and feels false labor pains.
  • Birth

    Birth
    After 9 months baby is born.
