Both his parents were both teachers in fine arts. Being born into an artistic family he was influenced by his parents. His mother was musician and an artist. His dad was a ceramicist, and he became an author.

The first influence to Rick Riordan was Lord of the Rings. It was the first book he said he read for fun. This begun his passion for literature, and writing.

He went to Alamo Heights High School, and worked as an editor for the school newspaper. During his time in high school he won thrid place in UIL feature writing.

The first University Rick went to was North Texas State, but transferred schools shortly afterwards.

He took this school to get a higher education, and majored in English and History.

The Big Red Tequila was Rick Riordan first book to be published, and won the 1998 Shamus Award and Anthony Award.

He taught English, History, and Greek mythology at different middle schools for 15 years. In 2002 St. Mary’s Hall gave him the first Master Teacher Award.

In 2011 at Children's Choice Book Award he was Author of the Year. Two of his books also won awards in 2011. The Red Pyramid won the Fifth Grade to Sixth Grade Book of the Year. While The Last Olympian won the Wyoming Soaring Eagle Book Award.
