    In the 1760s Richard was made prisoner, sold and shipped to America as a black slave to a British officer in the american colonies. He was the officers personal slave.

    In 1779 he was still a slave to the officer. He had an oppertunity to serve in the Northern British armies. As a slave, after he had done his duties in the army he would be allowed to be set free. From there he was a member of John Butler rangers and was stationed in the Niagra region of Quebec.

    On June 29th, 1794 he was one of 19 others to sign the free negroes petition. This petition was presented to luitenant governor, John Graves Simcoe. The petition went over, the black war vetrians and blacks who were born into Canada and a few who had been moved to Canada. the petion also emphasized on the seperation of the blacks from the whites.

    As war broke out he had another oppertunity for change he proposed to raise a group of darker colour on fort niagra. his offer was rejected, but luckly a small group of black men was raised in there community by Robert Runchey in the fall of 1812. Richard as soon as possible he volunteered, he served as private from 1812-1815. in the war of 1812 his group defended uper canada even at his old age, he also fought in the battle of lundies lane, the battle of stone creek and queen stone hieghts.
