  • The Sugar Act

    The Sugar Act
    There was a several cent tax increase on refined sugar, indigo, coffee, and some wines. This only effacted some parts of the colonists, but still effected the merchants enough to make them wanted to speak up about it. They wanted to have the right on how much they were paying.

    The first direct tax on American Colonists. Every pamphlet, newspaper, and any other leagle document had to have this British seal. And obviously the seal cost money. The colonists thought that they shouldn't have to pay for something that had been free for many years before. The colonists responded with force with demonstrations and a legal body called the Stamp act congress.

    The stamp act congress was created after the stamp act was taken into effect. This congress was created to deliver it's answers to the crown. This suprised Great Britian by the Colonists hostile reactions. Which lead to the repeal of the stamp act, but passed the diclaratory act, which stated that Great britian was supirior than the colonies, in whatever sinario

    The townshend acts were a series of taxes on paper, lead, glas paints and tea. The Colonists had the same reaction as they once had with the stamp and sugar tax. The colonists eventully repealed all of the taxes except for the tea tax. After all of the taxes it gave all the more reason for the colonists to break off of Britian as a new country.

    A fight between a group of british soldiers and a group of Colonialists broke out in the streets. This caused five Colonialsts deaths. It was said that the colonialists didn't have any weapons on them besides rocks, and the british groups opened fired on the group. This caused Americans to take it as a threat.

    The new taxes on tea raised, the American colonists desided to disgise themselves as mohawked Natives and boarded several British ships. While on the ships the Americans dumped 342 creates of tea into the Boston Harbor. Similar acts happened in Maryland, New York, and New Jersey for the next several months.

    Two groups of people from all across the colonies came together to talk about liberty. This congress contained 56 delegets from 12 colonies, georgia was the one exception. Philadelphia was where the meeting was held. They came together to respond on the unacceptable acts being placed by Britain. They had to meet in private to make sure that Britain didn't find out.

    The Battle of Lexington and Concord
    These battles were between American and British troops. The British decided to march from concord because it was a weapons depot. This ment that the Americans stockpiled weapons there. At the time Britain was occupying boston and were marching on concord, as they passed lexington. No one knows who fired the first shot but it was called "The shot heard 'round the world". The British won but was slowed enough to have the weapon depot from being saved. After that the british were forced to retreat.

    The second Continential Congress met in 1775, when the revolutionary war just begin. At the time, things were going terribly for the American colonists, and their armed forces were very disorganized. The continental congress created the continental army and named George Washington the commander in chief. And out of the discussions came the Declaration of independence, Articles of confederation and the Marine Corps.

    George Washington was named Commander in chief during the Second Continental Congress. This was done because the army that was constructed by the Colionist was at the time so disorderly that, George Washington, was one of the only people that could help train a successful army, and regain the order, to win the revolutionary war.

    This two day battle was being fought between the british army, which was under the command of General William Howe and the American forces which was under comand of Colonial William Prescot. The Americans had occupied Breed's hill in charlestown, inorder to protect the shipyard which was near Bosten. On June 17, 1775 the british atacked. They did win the batle but took expenential losses. The only reason why the Americans retreated was from the lack of ammunition.

    Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" published
    Thomas Paine wrote "Common Sense" to create citizens motivated to help further the colonialists cause for independence. While working for the independence of the colonies there were still people that thought the colonies should stay under the control of Britain. With the Comman Sense panphlet it will persuade the majority of the colonialist to want freedom.

    The British were forced out of Boston from General George Washington's successfull placement of fortification and cannons on dorchester hieghts.

    Richard Henry Lee proposes independence
    Henry Lee was a strong believer of independence for the colonies. And proposing to have a declaration written, it may be refered to as a frame of mind of what America stands for. Also by having a legal document for a country that gives ceretin rights to the citizens, it will help create the country in a major way.

    Declaration of Independence adopted
    The declaration of independence was adopted to allow every man to receive equality and liberty. This was written in to the declaration to free the slaves which still didn't have their freedom. In this draft the king had "waged war against human nature itself, violating its most sacred rights of life and liberty." This was written in the Declaration of independence would create imagary in americans minds which will cause reason in citizens minds that breaking off of britain was a brilliant idea.

    The declaration of independence was signed to finnaly announce the independence of the colonies from Great Britian. This was the finnal step, the finnal sheet of paper, which lead the American colinies to transform into the United states.
