Capture of Fort Ticonderoga

Battle of Bunker Hill
British attack Americans on Breeds Hill. British lose over 1000 men, but realize that the Americans aren't going to be an easy task and should be taken seriously. WilliamPrescott is known to have yelled, "Don't shoot till you see the whites of their eyes!" -
George Washington named commander in chief
George Washington is named commander over other names like John Hancock. He was named commander because of his military background and success. He assumed command in Cambridge on July 3rd, 1775. -
Battle of Trenton
Washington and his troops cross the Delaware on Christmas. Lead a suprise attack on the British and Hessians. Take 900 to have as part of the army. This was a success for the Americans and was a huge morale boost. -
American defeat at Quebec
Richard Montgomery and Benedict Arnold attack Quebec to try and capture some Canadian support. This attack failed and the Americans lost this battle. Within a year, the Americans stop trying to enlist Canadians for help. -
British evacuate Boston
General Howe leaves Boston for New York. He's afraid that the Americans will trap him in Boston by surrounding the city. This was a smart choice by Howe. -
Declaration of Independance is issued
Delegates at the Second Continental Congress vote to break away from Britain. The vote to have Thomas Jefferson write the Declaration of Independance. It's released on July 4th. -
Battle of Long Island
British attack the Americans on Long Island. This is an American defeat. The British will keep New York until November 1783. -
British occupy New York CIty
General Howe and his army finally arrive at New York after evacuating Boston in March. They take New York pretty much unopposed. They kept New York until November 1783. -
Battle of Brandywine
This was the largest land battle of the war. The British general was Willaim Howe and the Americans was George Washington. They met near Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Washingtons army was driven from the field, and the British won. -
British occupy Philadelphia
Howe and the British take Philly after Brandywine. They take it because its the seat of the 2nd continental congress. Howe resigned in Philly. Clinton took his place. Clinton ordered them to head back to New Yorl in 1778 -

was adopted by the 2nd Continental Congress. First established government in America. Wasn't a very stable form of government and eventually failed. -
Winter at Valley Forge
Washington and his army stayed here for 6 months. There were therrible living conditions. No stable shelter, lack of blankets, lack of food, no shoes, lack of medicine, pretty much anything you can think of for a homeless man. Many men went AWAL at this time. -

Fall of Savannah
Severely outnumbered by the British, the Americans retreated from Savannah but were flanked and had well over 400 men captured. This battle went to General Archibald Campbell and the British. -
Spain enters the war
Spain assisted the Americans by providing naval and land forces. The alliance wasn't a formal one though. -
