  • Start of student Protests

    The revolution began with a peaceful student demonstration in Budapest to demand political reforms and the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Hungary.
  • Violence Erupts

    The peaceful protests escalated into violence as protesters clashed with Hungarian security forces.

    Soviet Troops

    Soviet troops occupied Budapest. The center of the resistance was on the Széna square and Master street.
  • Soviet intervention

    Ceasefire with the Soviets where National Guard was established.
  • End of the one-party system

    Former political parties were reestablished.
  • Warsaw Pact

    Nagy Imre denounced the Warsaw Pact and with that Hungary became neutral.
  • Soviet Invasion

    The Soviet Union laughed an invasion on Budapest.
  • Kádár government

    The Revolutionary Workers'-Peasants' Government of Hungary was formed with Soviet support with the aim of replacing the Imre Nagy government.
  • End of fighting

    The last marks against the Soviet attacks were located in Csepel and Dunaújváros, when the insurgents finally succonded to the Soviets.
  • Nagy Imre arrested

    Together with his companions and with his family, the Soviets took him to Romania and he was kept under house arrest.
