Chapters one and two
Brady, J.T and Digger are waiting for Carl to take them to school when they see one of the DiAngelos put their kayak in the water and Brady is left wondering whether or not he should have told them not to go out on such a bad day. -
Chapters three and four
While Carl is driving them to school Brady starts to worry whether or not the kayaker is okay. Brady's mom checked Brady out of school to help with a search and rescue mission to find the missing kayaker. His mom tells him that it was Mrs. DiAngelo and her son Ben who is four years old. -
Chapters five and six
While Brady is searching Tilly (his yellow lab) starts barking at the shore. Brady turns the boat in the general direction and starts to search again. Once he gets close to the shoreline he sees the yellow lifejacket Ben is wearing. On the way to the dock where the ambulances are waiting Brady has to do CPR on Ben. While he is doing this he has to steer the boat in the direction of the dock. -
Chapters seven and eight
After Brady saves Ben, his friends J.T and Digger will not even talk to him and avoid him at all cost during school. This really upsets Brady and he starts to worry about his friends and their relationship. Soon after Brady learns that Ben has died. This makes Brady really upset because he had lost his sister when she was just six months old. -
Chapters nine and ten
Brady starts to wonder if what happend to Ben was his fault. Carl comes over to talk to Brady about the death of Ben and helps Brady a lot. -
Chapters eleven and twelve
A few days after Carl comes to talk to Brady the DiAngelo's have a funeral for Ben. Brady is too sad to go to the funeral. Brady's parents and Carl try to cheer Brady up but have no success in doing so. Brady starts to work for the DiAngelo's at a summer job. While Brady is working Mrs. DiAngelo gives Brady Ben's hamster, Tiny Tim. -
Chapters fifteen and sixteen
Brady starts to help his dad with his crabbing business since he has had a bad season. Brady starts to ponder what he is going to do with the drill. -
Chapters thirteen and fourteen
While Brady is working in the shed he sees something laying on the ground. When Brady picks up the object he sees that it is his father's cordless drill. Brady suspects that Digger might have something to do with the disappearance of his dad's drill. Brady first goes to J.T's house and finds out that J.T and Digger drilled holes in the bottom of the kayak. They filled the holes with water tight glue as a practical joke that turned out killing someone. -
Chapters seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, and twenty
Brady starts to really consider what he is going to do with the drill. Brady's dad isn't having very good luck with his crabbing business because of new crabbing regulations so Brady starts to help him. -
Chapters twenty-one and twenty-two
Brady's mom sees that Brady has a picture of his deceased sister Amanda. Brady and his mother have a very long talk about Amanda and his mom shows him where the key to the attic is so he can go and look at Amanda's things. -
Chapters twenty-three and twenty-four
Brady and his dad set out to find the kayak. When they pull the kayak up on the deck of the boat Brady tells his dad the whole story of how Digger and J.T. drilled the holes in the kayak and how he had given them the idea. Carl suggest that Brady get a lawyer just in case Brady can be charged too. -
Chapters twenty five, twenty six, twenty seven, and twenty eight
Brady reports his friends to the police and they are tried for second degree murder. Both are found guilty and are sentenced to nine months in a Juvenile Detention Center. Brady is finally relieved for the first time in months.
