Reading throughout the life of Emilio A.

  • Period: to

    Birth-Infancy

At this stage in my life, I was read to every night. I wouldn't be able to recall any of the stories read to me or who read them, but I'm told my mother, grandmother, or other family members read me stories. I wouldn't have understood anything but it could've been a method to keep me company or occupied. My brother being a year older going through reading kept me involved in listening.
  • Period: to

    Toddler Years

This segment of my life involved looking at picture books and being read to. I had lots of books about animals that had interactive components like soft fur on a dog's ears or alligator skin. I selected books that I wanted to hear or look at but I couldn't read. My mother and grandmother most likely read to me. My dad could have read to me but the chances are greater that my mom or grandma did. I enjoyed nonfiction, dinosaur books, and Clifford.
  • Period: to

    Early School (1st grade)

At this stage I learned to read and solidified reading skills. I read with my teacher and mom, and maybe my brother because he is a year older than me. I read every night before bedtime, and had reading logs by the time I could read alone.
  • Period: to

    2nd-6th Grade

During this time I remember reading every night. Academic books I remember reading for ELA class were Dolphin Cove, and Ruby Holler. I read countless graphic novels, books 1-5 of The Harry Potter Series, and anything that peaked my interest in the library. I read things like biographies about Tony Hawk or Kobe Bryant to realistic fiction books like Crash. I read books like Hunger Games and books like The Year of the Dog. I had a wide taste but disliked mystery and horror. Anything else I'd read.
  • Period: to

    7th and 8th Grade

I read less in these grades, but I still enjoyed graphic novels and comics. I can't remember the names. I did whatever reading was required in class textbooks or assignments but I don't remember anything profoundly great.
  • Period: to

    High School

I started to enjoy reading more in high school and did summer reading for English class. Books I read in high school include the textbooks, but also novels like I'll Meet You There, Animal Farm, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, The Great Gatsby, and Lord of The Flies to name a few. I didn't read much for liesure.
  • Period: to

    College

I started growing a liking to extensive and dystopian novels. In Community College we weren't assigned extra reading outside of textbooks, and I worked a lot outside of school. After graduating I read 1984 over the summer, and really enjoyed it. I still love reading and want to read as much as I can to round out my point of view as a future English Teacher. At Saint Leo I read the YA novel The Hate U Give and I appreciated it, although it's not my favorite genre.
