I would say the first thing that allowed me to be a competent reader would be learning my ABCs. The ABCs is the foundation that is critical when learning how to read.

The first memories I have of learning how to read was when my mom read books to me before bed and my favorite book back then was goldilocks. We read it so much I memorized a lot of the words.

Kindergarten was the very first time I experienced storytime. That was my favorite time of the day besides nap time. I always liked how animated the teacher was when reading the stories. It kept me interested and excited to read on my own.

I remember the first time I went to a public library thinking how cool it was that I could borrow a book and take it home to read. Borrowing books from the library allowed me to read books that my parents couldn't afford to buy.

This was one of my favorite times of the school year. I always got excited to see all the different books I could buy. Although I could not buy too many I wrote them down so I could go to the library and borrow them if they were available.

Book it was another event that I was excited about. Every time you read a book you would get a star on the bubble next to your name and when you met your quota of books you got to attend a pizza party at the end. This inspired me to read.

Shel Silverstein's "Where the Sidewalk Ends" was the first book that introduced me to poems. I loved how his poems included his illustrations and it made the poem come to life for me.

This was the first book that got me into reading a series of books. I loved the stories and imagined myself being part of the club.

The encyclopedia was a splurge that my parents purchased for me and my brother. It came in very handy when having to turn in a research paper or report. This was what we used back in the day to do research before the internet was available.

This was the second series of books that I read in high school with a bunch of my friends. It was fun to have a book that we could all relate to and talk about with each other.
