Raphael's father, Giovanni Santi, who was also a paniter died in 1494, when Raphael was just 11 years old. Rapael took over his father's workshop and became known as one of the best painters in Urbino.

In 1500 Raphael took the position of the apprentice of Pietro Vannunci, or Perugino, in Perugia.
