  • Jane Addams

    Jane Addams
    Jane Addams was a social worker who founded the settlement house movement. She did this through the establishment of The Hull House in Chicago. The Hull House was the first settlement house. The Hull House was a place where food, shelter, and education was offered. Settlement houses were a part of social reform in the Progressive Era. Addams was one of the most prominent reformers during the Progressive Era.

    Corrupt Practices Reform- Sherman Anti-Trust Act
    Sherman Anti-Trust Act has to do with the Progressive Era because this was corrupt practices reform. This act limited the power of companies that controlled a high percentage of market share. It also restricted conspiracy to block trade. This act shows the Progressive era because they want better life for people.
  • Jacob Riis

    Jacob Riis was a muckracker. A muckraker is a journalist who wrote about corrupt side of business and public life. Jacob Riis wrote "How The Other Half Lives". This work was about the living conditions of the urban poor, it focused on the tenements. This resulted in New York City passing building codes to promote safety and health.
  • Robert La Follette

    Robert La Follette
    Robert La Follette was the governor of Wisconsin in 1891. La Follette concects to the Progressive Era because he was one of the main supporters of the Wisconsin Idea. The Wisconsin Idea was employment of technical experts for public service, opposition to political bosses, railroad regulation, tax reform and direct primary nomination. Overall La Follette was a leading reformer during the Progressive Era.

    The Temperance Movement would be an example of public service reform. Reformers belived that alcohol was not good for the people and wanted to get rid of it. They fought for the ban of the buying and selling of alcohol. Reforms thought they were doing right for the public.
  • H.G Wells

    H.G Wells
    Wells was a scientific author. He wrote many books. His main concept was Darwinistic characteristics. He belived that people under a certain intelligence should not have children because our species should thrive. He is the father of Progressive Movement because he pushed for change with his uncharacteristic ideas of the time period.
  • Bussiness Reform

    At this time many bussinesses were going aganist the Sherman Anti- Trust Act. Roosevelt was very upset by this. So Roosevelt took apart companies that had established trusts and monopolies. These companies were taking down, this was called trustbusting.
  • Eugene Debs

    Eugene Debs
    Eugene Debs was the American Union Founder. He supported reforms in Progressive Era. He was one of the International Labor Union founders. Debs wanted equal working conditions for workers.
  • Upton Sinclair

    Upton Sinclair
    Upton Sinclair was a famous muckracker. Sinclair wanted to expose the shocking details of the meat packing industry in Chicago. In order to expose this cause he wrote "The Jungle". This book raised awareness and prompted congress to pass the Meat Inspection Act and Pure Food and Drug Act.
  • Charles Evans Hughes

    Charles Evans Hughes
    Charles Evans Hughes was an important progressive leader. He was a Repulican. Hughes was also the governor of New York. Hughes eventually stepped down from governer to be appointed by Taft to the Supreme Justice. Then finally Hughes ran for President but was in a close race Wilson won. Hughes had quite the progressive record including labor legislation, insurance reform and creation of public commission.
  • William Jennings Bryan

    William Jennings Bryan
    Bryan was nominated to be President three times. On the last time he was beat by Taft. He served in Congress for for two terms. Bryan never became President, but he did become Secretary of State. He helped Wilson and influenced other leaders to have Progressive Ideas.
  • Hiram Johnson

    Hiram Johnson
    Hiram Johnson was the governor of California. Johnson was also a part of the progressive party. Johnson pushed for women's suffrage and the ability of candidates to register in more than one political party. This added initiative, referendum and recall to the state government. The made California a direct democracy.
  • Labor Reform

    The National Child Labor Committee was created. This committee was put into place to better the working conditions for children. They passed laws in over 40 states. This relates to the Progressive Era because it shows that the government is leading towards progress and reform.
  • Teddy Rooservelt

    Teddy Rooservelt
    Roosevelt was nominated President of the Progressive Party. This party was also called the Bull Moose Party. The Progressive party was formered after the split in the Republican Party between Roosevelt and Taft. This party had many reforms including tarriff reform, strict regulation on industrial matters reform, womens suffrage, prohibition of child labor and several other reforms.
  • 16th Amendment

    16th Amendment
    The 16th Amendment was the status of income tax clarified. This Amendment passed during the Progressive Era. It gives the federal government the power to lay and collect an income tax. This Amendment also states it can lay or collect regardless of the source of that income.
  • Woodrow Wilson

    Woodrow Wilson
    Woodrow Wilson was elected the 28th president. Wilson was for the Progressive Party. Wilson argued for a strong central government and fought for anti-trust legislation and labor rights. Wilson's aim was for world order.
  • 17th Amendment

    17th Amendment
    The 17th Amendment is that senators are elected by popular vote. The was passed during the Progressive Era.The Senate of the US would be composed of two senators from each state. These Senators would be elected by the people and serve for six years.
  • 18th Ammendment

    18th Ammendment
    This Ammendment came about during the Progressive Era. It was that Liquor is abolished. The manafacture, sale or transportation of intoxicating liquors is prohibitied. The Progressive Party liked this because they thought alcohol not good and performed moral reform.
  • Social Justice Reform

    Women's Suffrage was a big social justice reform. Women fought for years to earn the right to vote. They set up unions and protested. Finally in 1920 due to the passing of the 19th Ammendment they got the right to vote. This relates to the Progressive Era because that women should have the justice to vote.
  • 19th Amendment

    19th Amendment
    The 19th Amendment is Women's Suffrage. The Amendment states Women have the right to vote. This Amendment is very important for the Progressive Party because they had been pushing for women suffrage reform. The 19th Amendment shows how powerful this era was and how influential the leaders were.
