    Fortran was developed by: John Backus and IBM
    It was built for science and engineering applications.
    The name Fortran was derived from the name Formula Training System.
  • MATH-MATIC

    MATH-MATIC was developed by: Charles Katz
    The original intent was for use in a computer known as a UNIVAC.
    It's name is completely unique.
  • Lisp

    Lisp was developed by: John McCarthy.
    Lisp's original intent was created as a practical Mathmatical Notation for Computer Programs.
    It's name derives from the "LISt Processing".
  • COBOL

    COBOL was made by: Howard Bromberg, Howard Discount, Vernon Reeves, Jean E. Sammet, William Selden & Gertrude Tierney.
    It was designed for businesses and financess.
    COBOL is an acronym for: COmmon Business-Oriented Language
  • RPG

    RPG was developed by the company IBM.
    RPG was designed for IBM I or other OS systems made by IBM.
    The name RPG does not derive from anything however it does have the same name as the RPG gun.

    BASIC was developed by John George Kemeny and Thomas Eugene Kurtz.
    It was designed for students at Darthmouth College in New Hampshire to learn programming if they were in other fields.
    BASIC is an Acronym for: Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code

    It was developed by: Wally Feurzeig & Seymour Papert
    LOGO was originally intented to teach concepts of LISP, another programing language, however it is used for line animation graphics and to control a small robot which is named the turtle.
    The program is a direct spin off of LISP.

    It was designed for a group project known as Multics.
    The program was taken from BCPL.

    It's original intent was to be used for object-oriented programming.

    SQL was designed to manage data in a relational database management system or is comonly used for "stream processing",
    SQL is an acronym for Structured Querry Language.

    ADA was developed by: Jean Ichbiah.
    It was built for the United States Department of Defense.
    The program was named after the first programmer Ada Bryon.

    C++ was designed by Bjarne Stroustrup in 1983.
    It was designed for system programming however can be used for other things.
    C++ was derived from the C language.

    Visual Basic was developed by the infamous Microsoft.
    Visual Basic is designed to be an easy way to program for beginners.
    Visual Basic is a direct descendent to the computer language BASIC and therefore gets it's name from BASIC.

    Python was developed by: Guido van Rossum.
    Python was designed to have fewer lines of code in a program.
    The name Python does not derive from any major acronym or anything however it is free.
  • Delphi

    Delphi was developed by: Borland
    It was developed as a rapid application tool for windows.
    It is nicknamed Delphi because it was originially called Borland Delphi but later called Embarcadero Delphi due to the different companies who were producing it.
  • Javascript

    Javascript was developed by: Brendan Eich
    It was developed for the use of web browsers and other programs such as the document reader PDF.
    Javascript is very different from the programming language Java which was developed the same year.
  • PHP

    PHP was created by: Rasmus Lerdorf
    It was orginally used for web servers and still is today however it is mixed in with HTTP code.
    It's orginial acronym was Personal Home PAge but got changed later on to Hypertext Preprocessor, which the latter has no name relation to PHP.
  • Java

    Java was developed by: James Gosling and Sun Microsystems.
    Java was created for the use of Sun Microsystems for their own use, specifically their own virtual machines and class libraries.
    The name "Java" is a slang term for coffee and the languages logo is a cup of coffee.
