Programming Languages Timeline

  • Plankalkul

    Plankalkul was designed by Konrad Zuse, and was a computer language designed for engineering purposes.
  • Fortran

    Fortran was developed by John Backus and IBM, and it is used forgeneral purposes especially suited for numeric computation and scientific computation.
  • MATH-MATIC

    Developed by Charles Katz, and led to the developement of the first English language business data compiler .
  • Lisp

    Lisp was developed by Steve Russell, Timothy P. Hart, and Mike Levin, and was originally created for Practical Mathematical notation for computers.
  • RPG

    RPG was developed by IBM, and is a high level programming language for business applications.
  • COBOL

    COBOL was developed by Grace Hopper, William Selden, Gertrude Tierney, Howard Broomberg, Howrd Discount, Vernon Reeves, and Jean E. Sammet, And is an acronym for COmmon Business-Oriented Language and would mostly be used in business and finance systems.
  • BASIC

    BASIC was developed by John George Kemeny and Thomas Eugene Kurtz, and it stands for Beginners All Purpose Symbolic Instruction Code. The language was designed so students could write programs for the Dartmouth Time Sharing System.

    LOGO was developed by Wally Feurzeig and Seymour Papert, and was best known for its Turtle that produced line graphics.

    B was developed Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie, and was used as machine code.

    PASCAL was designed by Niklaus Wirth, and was intended to encourage good programming practices.

    Was developed by Dennis Ritchie and Bell Labs. C is a general purpose programming language.

    ML was designed by Robin Milner and others at the University of Edinburgh, and was known for its use in the Hindley-Milner type interface algorithm, which can interpret an equation without requiring explicit annotations.

    SQL was developed by Donald D. Chamberlin and Raymon F. Boyce. It is a special purpose programming languagedesigned for managing data held in a relational database management sytem.

    ADA was named after Ada Lovelace, who was the first Computer Programmer. ADA language was first used for aviation and militairy programs.

    Was designed by Bjarne Stroustrup, and is a intermediate level programming language because it brings features from low level progamming and high level programming together.

    Python was developed by The Python Software Foundation, and is a widley used general purpose, hig levle programming language.

    Visual Basic was developed by Microsoft, and is used to create an application using the components that it provides.

    Javascript was developed by Netscape Communications Corporation and Mozzila Foundation, it is an interpreted computer programming language for web browsers.

    Delphi was developed by Embarcadero Technologies, and it is used for for console, desktop graphical, web, and mobile apps.

    Java was developed by Oracle Corporation, and its designed so programs can have the least dependencies as possible.
