Programming Languages

  • FORTRAN

    FORTRAN was created in 1957 by John Backus. Its main purpose was for scientific and engineering applications, but was the main programming language early on.
  • Math-matic

    Math-matic was created by a group led by Charles Katz in 1957. Its purpose was to be an improvement over FORTRAN.
  • COBOL

    COBOL (COmmon Business-Oriented Language) was created by Grace Hopper in 1959. Its main purpose was in business, finance, and administrative systems for companies and governments.
  • BASIC

    BASIC (Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code) was created by John G. Kemeny and Thomas E. Kurtz in 1964. Its main purpose was to be an easy language to learn and use.
  • Logo

    Logo was created in 1967 by Daniel G. Bobrow, Wally Feurzig, Seymour Papert, and Cynthia Solomon. Its purpose is to be used for educational purposes.
  • Pascal

    Pascal was created in 1970 by Niklaus Wirth. It's main purpose was to encourage good programming practices.
  • C

    C was created in 1972 by Dennis Ritchie. It's purpose is to implement system software, and very widely used.
  • SQL

    SQL, or Structured Query Language, was created in 1974 by Donald D. Chamberlin and Raymond F. Boyce. Its purpose is to manage data in relational database management systems.
  • Ada

    Ada was created in 1980 by a team led by Jean Ichbiah. Its main purpose was to be better than all of the programming languages previously used by the U.S. Department of Defense.
  • C++

    C++ was created in 1983 by Bjarne Stroustrup. Its purpose is to add object-oriented programming to the C programming language. It is one of the most popular programming languages.
  • Visual Basic

    Visual Basic was created in 1991 by Microsoft. It main purpose is to be easy to learn and use.
  • Java

    Java was created in 1995 by James Gosling. It's main purpose is to be a simple language that can be run on nearly any platform.
