  • Plankalkul

    Plankalkul was developed for engineering purposes in 1948 by Konrad Zuse. This name comes from the word "kalkul" which means formal system.
  • MATH-MATIC

    MATH-MATIC was created by Charles Katz in 1957. It was made to be an improvement of Fortran.
  • Fortran

    Fortran, designed in 1957 was created by John Backus. Fortran comes from the name ibm mathmatical FORmula TRANslating system. It was created to be a more pratical language compared to IBM's old assembly language.
  • Lisp

    Lisp was developed in 1958 by John McCarthy, The name lisp comes from LISt Processing. It was created to be a practical mathematical notation for computer programs.
  • COBOL

    COBOL was created by a comittee of researces in 1959. The name COBOL comes from the acronym COmmon Business-Oriented Language. It was designed for business, finance, and administrative systems.
  • RPG

    RPG was developed by IBM in 1959 in order to replicate punched card processing on the IBM 1401. The name stands for Report Program Generator.
  • BASIC

    BASIC was originally designed by John George Kemeny in 1964. The acronym of the name comes from the name of an unpublished paper. BASIC was made for students at Dartmouth without a strong mathmatical background.
  • LOGO

    Logo was created for education purposes by Wally Feurzeig and Seymour Papert. The name comes from the greek word "logos" meaning word. Logo was created for educational purposes.
  • C

    C was developed from 1969-1973 by Dennis Ritchie. It's called "C" because it was derived from the program "B", It was designed to provide language constructs that map efficiently to machine instructions.
  • B

    The language "B" was created at Bell Labs. B was based on the language "BCPL". B was made almost like BCPL except for some unnecessary features that would take up too much memory. It was developed sometime in 1969.
  • Pascal

    Pascal was created by Niklaus Wirth in 1970 intended to encourage good programming practices.
  • ML

    ML was created in 1973 by Robin Milner. The name ML comes from the word "metalanguage". It was created to develop proof tactics in the LCF theorem prover
  • SQL

    SQL was developed by Donald D. Chamberlin designed to manage data. The name stands for Structured Query Language.
  • C++

    C++ was develed by Bjarne Stroustrup from 1979-1983. It is a very popular language. It's name is C++ because it was made to be an improvement of C with more enhnacements such as classes and virtual functions.

    Python was created by Guida van Rossum in 1991 in order to be a successor to the language "ABC".
  • Visual Basic

    Visual Basic was developed by microsoft in 1991 in order to be easy to use. Visual Basic was derived from the language "BASIC".
  • Javascript

    Javascript was created in 1994 by Brendan Eich. It was made to be a light weight interpreted language to appeal to non professional programmers.
  • Delphi

    Delphi was developed by borderland in 1995. Delphi is used as a high level program that is easy to use.
  • Java

    Java was created by James Gosling. It is named after the coffee that was liked by the creater. There were 5 things that java was being made to do; be simple and familiar, robust and secure, architecture-neutral and portable, run with high preformance, and be interpreted, threaded, and dynamic.
  • PHP

    PHP originally stood for Personal Home Page but now means Hypertext preprocessor. It was created by Rasmus Lerdorf in 1995 to be embedded into HTML rather than getting an external file to process the data.
  • ADA

    Originally, ADA was designed by Jean Ichbiah and the rest of his team. The purpose of ADA was to reliable and efficient for huge applications. ADA was named after Augusta Ada Lovelace, who was thought to be the first programmer. The most current release came out in 2012.
