    Andrew Johnson was the vice president of Abraham Lincoln during Lincoln's second term. When Abraham Lincoln died (April 15, 1865) Johnson took office. n 1866, Johnson vetoed the Freedmen’s Bureau bill and the Civil Rights bill, legislation aimed at protecting blacks.

    Ulysses S. Grant was the 18th president of the United States. The biggest issue of Grant's presidency was Reconstruction. He continued occupying the South with federal troops. Grant's administration fought against states who denied blacks the right to vote. In 1870, the 15th amendment was passed.

    Rutherford B. Hayes was the 19th president. He took office determined to reform the system of civil service appointments, which had been based on the spoils system since president Andrew Johnson. As president, Hayes oversaw the end of Reconstruction.

    William Howard Taft was the 27th president of the United States. Following Roosevelt into office, Taft continued to enforce antitrust laws. Also the sixteenth amendment was passed while he was in office, that allowed the U.S. to collect income taxes.

    The Republican Party was split between Roosevelt and Taft, which meant that Wilson easily won. He became the 28th president of the United States. One of the 1st events of Woodrow Wilson's presidency was the passage of the Underwood Tariff.

    Calvin Coolidge was the 30th president of the United States. He succeeded to the presidency on August 3, 1923 when Harding died from a heart attack. In 1924, the Veteran's Bonus passed through Congress even though Coolidge vetoed it.
