- Lincoln was long allied with abolitionists and outlawed slavery by issuing the Emancipation Proclamation on 1 January 1863, legally freeing some 3 million slaves.

He saved the Union and freed the slaves. In his Gettysburg Address, he defined the Civil War as a re-dedication to the ideals set forth in the Declaration of Independence. -
