    9/11 Terrorist attack
    19 militants associated with the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda hijacked four airliners and carried out suicide attacks against targets in the US. Two planes were flown into the towers of the World Trade Center, a third plane hit the Pentagon, and the fourth plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Over 3,000 people were killed during the attacks, including more than 400 police officers and firefighters.

    He was sentenced to death. Saddam Hussein is sentenced to death by hanging for the 1982 Dujail massacre. Co-defendants Barzan Hassan and Awad Bandar receive death sentences. Former Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan is sentenced to life in prison. Abdullah Ruwaid, Ali Dayem Ali, and Mizher Ruwaid receive 15 year sentences. Mohammed Azzawi Ali is acquitted for lack of evidence.

Ford became the first unelected president in the nation’s history. A longtime Republican congressman from Michigan, Ford had been appointed vice president less than a year earlier by President Nixon.
