    Proclamation of 1763
    Settlement was prohibited beyond the Appalachian Mountains. The colonists did not agree with the proclamation, so they decided to violate the proclamation line.
  • Sugar Act of 1764

    Sugar Act of 1764
    Colonists were forced to pay taxes on molasses. Pirates would still smuggle molasses into the colonies.
  • Stamp Act of 1765

    Stamp Act of 1765
    Taxes were placed on most paper products. The Sons of Liberty, founded by Sam Adams, harassed British tax collectors. Congress issued a Declaration of Rights and Grievances, which meant parliament could not impose tax on colonists because the colonists were not being represented.
  • Boston Massacre of 1770

    Boston Massacre of 1770
    The colonists and British soldiers were in a heated scuffle. Things got out of hand and the soldiers ended up killing 5 colonists. The colonists used the Boston Massacre as propaganda for independence from Britain.
  • Boston Tea Party of 1773

    The Tea Act was passed by parliament, which was created to aid struggling tea companies from England. The colonies could not import teas from anywhere but England. The colonist revolted against this, throwing 18,000 pounds of tea into the harbor.
  • Intolerable Acts of 1774

    Intolerable Acts of 1774
    Parliament shut down the harbor after the Boston Tea Party act. No goods could be shipped into the harbor. The colonists created the 1st continental congress as a result. The intolerable acts said that if the British used force against the colonies, then they would declare independence.
  • Repeal of Stamp Act in 1776

    Parliament repealed the stamp act, but on the dame day, they issued the Declaratory Act to make Parliament's power clear. This gave parliament the right to tax.
